What Janitor sees stays on your Mac.

No analytics, no crash reports, no ads. Janitor goes online for three things, and this page lists each one.

On your Mac

To decide what's idle, Janitor looks at the windows and apps you have open and which one you're using, the tabs open in Chrome, Chrome Canary and Safari (once you switch Safari on), running processes and the ports they hold, and the size of the folders its disk rules cover.

It keeps your rules, what was in use when, and the run log in ~/Library/Application Support/Janitor. Addresses of closed tabs are kept for 30 days so Restore can reopen them, and the run log is kept for 30 days. Your license key is stored in the macOS Keychain.

What goes online

Janitor has no analytics, crash reporting or ads. It contacts a server for three things only:

  • License. Activating a key sends the key and your Mac's name to Polar (api.polar.sh). After that, Janitor checks the key with Polar once a day.
  • Speed test. Janitor runs Apple's networkQuality tool on a schedule and when you ask, within a monthly data budget. It measures against Apple's servers. You can switch the schedule off.
  • Public IP. The Network pane asks Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) for your public address, only when you click Show.

When you buy

Polar runs checkout and billing. Your card details go to Polar, not to us. Polar shares your email address and order with us so we can send your license key, and the key email is sent through Resend.

You can manage or cancel your plan any time in the Polar customer portal.

This website

getjanitor.app runs on Cloudflare and has no analytics or tracking scripts. To deliver license keys, we keep a record of each key email: your email address, your Polar customer and key IDs, and whether it was sent. We keep it so we can resend your key if you lose it, and delete it when you ask.

We count downloads of each version, not who downloaded them.

Your choices

To remove Janitor and everything it stored, quit it, delete it from Applications, and delete ~/Library/Application Support/Janitor. Its license entry can be deleted in Keychain Access.

To have us delete your email record, write to support@getjanitor.app. Depending on where you live, you can also ask for a copy of what we hold about you, or have it corrected. We don't sell or share your personal information, and we don't use it for advertising.
